They were one of the first companies to offer seamless cloud storage and file sharing, and I have yet to see another service come along and offer something good enough (and free enough) to make me switch. That being said, I hate their native Mac app and use this little tip to avoid using it. If you hate the desktop version of the Dropbox app as much as I do, here’s how to make Dropbox open folders in Finder.Įnsure the Dropbox app is running on your Mac and follow these steps. Click the Dropbox icon in your Mac’s menu bar located at the top of your screen. In the window that pops up, find your account icon located in the far top right and click the down arrow next to it. We are now in the General pane of the Preferences tab, and you should see the option ‘Open folders in.’ Click it, and select Finder. Click the Dropbox app icon in the menubar of the desktop and select the gear icon in the lower-right corner of the menu. Now anytime you tap the Dropbox icon in your menu bar and select Folders, your Dropbox Folder will open in a native Finder window. In the General tab of the Preferences window, make sure the Enable Finder integration option is checked. You can read more about its features here.It feels a lot more integrated with macOS, and again it allows you to skip dealing with the desktop Dropbox app. You’ll be able to start Slack conversations and share content to Slack channels directly from Dropbox. “In a perfect world, I would just like for them to just look at him as the cat, and does he meet our standard or doesn’t he meet it, and this is the coat color, and it happened naturally on him,” Stevenson said. However, Calboy - and other chimeras like him - can still compete in the household pet and agility categories, according to the CFA, and the International Cat Association, a separate organization, hasn’t put any restrictions on chimeras. In a statement provided to NBA, the CFA said it’s concerned chimerism, which is a genetic anomaly, could be detrimental to cats. The CFA added the matter of Dawntreader Texas Calboy to its February 2018 board meeting as an emergency addendum, voting to explicitly bar chimeras from cat fancy shows. The judges “were holding him up and talking about how well he met the standard and how beautiful he was, and then they would say ‘well, if he was a girl,’ because his color was allowed as a girl, ‘if he was a girl we would final him, I might even make him best in show,'” Stevenson said. The handsome calico made his debut in January at a Houston show sponsored by the Cat Fancier’s Association (CFA), but despite universal agreement that Calboy has the looks, he’s barred from appearing in any future CFA “best in breed” events. The Cat Fancier’s Association doesn’t fancy himĪs for Dawntreader Texas Calboy, while he’s got a loving family and a long life of being adored by his humans ahead of him, one thing he won’t be doing is winning awards for “best in breed” at cat shows. That’s because tabby, calico and tortoiseshell are coat patterns, not breeds. Just like a wide variety of cat breeds - including Siamese and domestic short-hairs - can be tabby cats, as many as 16 different breeds can be calicos. It’s usually at this point when some people get confused: “Wait, but isn’t Calboy a Maine Coon? How can he be a Maine Coon and a Calico?” The unusual combination allows a cat like Calboy to develop a coat pattern and color combination that would be normally impossible for males. But with two X chromosomes, females can be orange and black.Ī chimera like Calboy has three chromosomes - XXY - which is caused by an incomplete division of the male’s XY chromosome pair at the time of fertilization, according to the University of Miami. The X chromosome is responsible for coat color: With only one X, males can be either orange or black, but normally not both. Male cats have X and Y chromosomes, while female cats have two X chromosomes. “Where a chimera comes in,” Barton said, “that’s when non-identical twins merge.” How XX becomes XXY Dawntreader Texas Calboy, the rare male calico cat. Normally, “we have one embryo with two different, separate, fertilization incidents,” which results in non-identical twins, the veterinarian explained. “Where the question comes in is how on Earth do we get a male cat to express what is known as a predominantly female trait? Because it’s technically almost genetically impossible to get that type of combination,” Barton told the Dallas-area NBC affiliate, NBCDFW.Ĭhimeras have two sets of DNA, Barton said. So how does a coat color associated almost entirely with female cats end up on a male, and why is the combination so rare?Ĭalboy is a chimera, according to veterinarian Brittney Barton of HEAL Veterinary Hospital in Dallas. “It wasn’t until we took him for his second week of shots at our vet, that I realized he was a boy, and I was shocked,” said Mistelle Stevenson, a Texas breeder who decided to keep Calboy as a member of her permanent household pride. Only one out of 10,000 male calicos are capable of fathering kittens. And even in that exclusive club, Calboy is unique as an extremely rare fertile male calico, since most of the males who sport the coat color are incapable of reproducing. Calico coats are associated with female cats, and for good reason - only one out of every 3,000 Calicos are male, according to a genetic study by a researcher team at the University of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine. His bushy tail, a trademark of the breed, frames his crouching form, lending an imposing look to the gentle giant as he poses on a log near his family’s home in Waxahachie, Texas.īut what truly makes him unique is his coat color. Like most Maine Coons, Dawntreader Texas Calboy is regal: thick tufts of hair fill out his large body, giving him a look that seems more big cat than housecat. The rating service, such as Morningstar, will ascribe the fund's performance to "alpha". The client won't necessarily be able to discern that form of risk-arbitrage through the monthly or quarterly performance reports he receives. There are occasions when the market consensus offers opportunities to earn annualized rates of return of 100% or more to the adept portfolio manager, but those opportunities are both temporary in nature and carry a high risk of not turning out well. The reason actively-managed portfolios have very high turn-over ratios is that to achieve the returns that justify the cost of management, the manager must exploit transient price inefficiencies that are of a very temporary and highly transient nature before his competitors do so. This is an all-too-common occurrence in the business. What the industry ascribes to "alpha" is more often a case of mis-specification of the market index employed to determine the parameters "alpha" and "beta". It's not a perfect theory, but the glass is nearer full than empty, and it's a lovely supply and demand starting place to understand an industry that persists for decades. Green Journal of Political Economy 20-1295 and a series following, here . The seminal paper is "Mutual Fund Flows and Performance in Rational Markets" Jonathan B. Fees persist in equilibrium, fees are equal to alpha on average, alpha post fees are about zero, flows follow performance. Investors are earning the same zero alpha they get on the index so why not. It’s equilibrium – if investors leave, alpha to investors goes up again, and they return. He charges 1% fee, and investors get zero alpha. Now he has $50 million assets under management. Investors see his great performance and rush in. So he earns 5%, charges 1% fee, investors get 4%. he can earn $500k, but the skill does not scale. The basic idea is really clever: A manager has 5% alpha skill on $10 milllion, i.e. Here is the transcript and audio.I mentioned Jonathan Berk, and should have mentioned his coauthors Rick Green and Jules Van Binsbergen, on how active management can persist even though investors don't make any money on it. They’ll ask it of the refrigerator, but they will not ask it of the surgeon, nor will they ask it of the referring doctor. Yet, before you do surgery, people rarely look up, how good is that surgeon? What’s that surgeon’s record? What questions should I ask of that surgeon? For example, before you’d buy a TV, you’d look up and see what are the different characteristics and so on. They’re also very afraid of the quality part, of having that quality discussion. People really don’t like the money being involved in the medical care part. They really don’t like to go to their doctor and say, “Doctor, how do I trade off the money here versus the medicine?”Īs a result, they wind up not taking the medicine, and then they avoid the doctor because they’re ashamed to admit to the doctor. What we would hope they would do is go to their doctor and say, “Doctor, is there any way that there could be a cheaper medicine that might work because $30 is hard for me this month?” In practice, people are extremely uncomfortable doing that. If you go to the doctor, and the doctor says you should take medication X, and you go to the pharmacy, and the pharmacy says that’ll be $30, a fair number of people will walk away and say, “I don’t have $30.” It goes back a little bit to some of the behavioral issues that we were talking about, but I think it’s slightly different. Below is an excerpt:ĬUTLER: Everything that we know in healthcare is that people have difficulty choosing on the basis of price and quality. In real life, scientists have announced a ceramic, aluminum oxynitride (trade name Alon) which is as strong as steel, but transparent. In the professional materials science journal JOM, for example, there are articles such as The (Mostly Improbable) Materials Science and Engineering of the Star Wars Universe and Personification: The Materials Science and Engineering of Humanoid Robots. On the other hand, there is criticism of the unrealistic materials science used in science fiction. This is also the theme of many technical articles, such as Material By Design: Future Science or Science Fiction?, found in IEEE Spectrum, the flagship magazine of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The predictive aspects are emphasized, for example, in the motto of the Georgia Tech's department of materials science and engineering – Materials scientists lead the way in turning yesterday's science fiction into tomorrow's reality. This is all based of the experience of having lvled multiple infiltrators and blademasters, and unless you are not building pierce, or maybe building a very weird pierce NB, then 2x slicers should absolutely feel like a solid choice over other weapons for any half decent melee pierce build wanting to once shot mobs or slice a boss up If however you go go full dw melee wps/"% weapon dmg", and have 2x slicers+blade of nadaan with some modest pierce RR you will absolutely feel the difference as you will slice through anything in a matter of seconds Trying to keep it in one place so i don't get confused heh.Īnyways dermapteran slicers "only" work in a pierce build, that means you have blades of nadaan constellation to increase amor piercing to 100%, (because then all physical dmg bonus or skill will be converted to piercing, ex Cadence), without that/with a build more oriented towards cold or acid, ex ABB, or no pierce wps then dermapteran slicer will not feel all that "impressive" to you Probably be 10 or so more levels before I get a good feel for it. Right now I am not all that impressed with the piercing damage, but on the other hand I don't have Quick Cut or Whirling Death yet, both of which skills are augmented by the slicers. I'm going to compare the two as the character gains levels. So, I basically have two sets of gear: One geared toward to cold/acid damage, the other to piercing. I grabbed a couple of Demopteran Slicers, outfitted them with vicious spike components to give the empowered impaling weapon perk. Originally posted by Re our discussion in the other thread about Nightblades.
